Meet The Team
Welcome to the Lodge 401 Family

Rhys Hartigan is the heart and soul of 401, a passionate chef, owner, and all-round legend who’s deeply embedded in every aspect of the experience—from first contact to final farewells. With over two decades in Niseko, Rhys knows every run and just about everyone, making him your go-to guy for local secrets and the best powder lines.
A professional chef since 1999, his resume spans everything from being head chef at exclusive ski and surf resorts to owning Niseko’s first fine food truck. He’s also a seasoned hospitality consultant, helping local businesses thrive. Rhys first came to Japan in 2002, instantly falling in love with the culture, the snow, and the incredible food. With a deep appreciation for Japanese cuisine and a flair for fusion, he brings bold flavors to the table—and to the mountain.
Off the slopes, Rhys is a former punk rocker, vintage car enthusiast, fitness coach, handyman, and full-time family man. Once a wild skateboarder, he discovered snowboarding 25 years ago and never looked back—these days, you’ll find him ripping steep lines, launching off cliffs, and bouncing through Niseko’s famous mushrooms. He even helped shape the local nightlife as a DJ in the area’s first big bars and clubs. From luxury accommodations to mountain tours,
Rhys does it all—so if you’re looking for a true local experience, he’s the guy to know.

Zoey Kuo, General Manager, co-owner of Lodge 401 and the brains and backbone behind the operation. Originally from Taiwan and an engineer by trade, Zoey brings sharp precision and immaculate organization to everything she does—from seamless trip planning to the smooth running of daily lodge life. Since moving to Japan in 2015, she’s become a true powder hound, carving up Niseko’s deep snow by day and nighter corduroy by night. Always happy to help in any way she can, Zoey even runs an in-house beauty nail salon for guests looking to relax in style. Whether you’re seeking the best hidden onsen, top local eats, or a cozy bar for après cocktails, Zoey’s got the insider knowledge to make your trip unforgettable.

Richard Rees, Head Bartender at Lodge 401, is the ultimate storyteller, resident comedian, and undeniable life of the party. A kind and wise soul who’s always ready to lend a hand or even the shirt off his back, Richy brings warmth, laughter, and unforgettable energy to every evening.
With an impressive knowledge of local and imported wines and whiskeys, he’s your go-to for perfect food pairings and custom-crafted cocktails that are as creative as they are delicious. Once a guest at the lodge, Richy is now an irreplaceable team member whose presence lights up the room.
One of Niseko’s original powder hunters, he’s been chasing snow in the area since the mid-90s, long before the tourism boom. Whether you’re after a one-off signature drink or a story that’ll leave you in stitches, don’t miss your chance to spend a night at the bar with Richy.

Tyler Kirkman is the ultimate all-rounder at Lodge 401—a true legend whose personality is as big as Mt. Yotei and whose heart is just as impressive. There’s no job too tough for Tyler, and his dedication to guest care and comfort shines through in everything he does. From guest relations and snow clearing to mountain orienteering and driving, he’s everywhere you need him to be. A gun snowboarder, awesome cook, and great bartender, Tyler brings skill and good vibes to every corner of the lodge. Always up for a chat and an après drink, he’s the kind of guy who’ll not only make your stay memorable but might even take you out to his favorite local night spots—if you’re lucky.

Ramona Lia is the youngest and most adorable member of the Lodge 401 crew—a true heart melter and the unofficial Guest Entertainment Specialist. Carrying the torch for the next generation of 401 shredders, she brings pure joy and cheeky energy to the lodge. Whether she’s dragging mum and dad away from their work duties, jumping into the middle of a check-in, or turning the lounge into her personal playground, Ramona knows how to keep things lively. A snowman artist, sofa dance floor enthusiast, and always ready to play with anyone who gives her a moment, she’s the little spark that lights up the lodge—and a big reason guests leave with smiles and unforgettable memories.
